Ever checked out any yurts? They are quite affordable and really beautiful...and they are not limited, meaning they could be as big as one of those boxy condos and still appeal to those who would like to stay/live in this area without buying an inefficient fixer-upper. As Ani DiFranco says "Who said I like right angles? These are not my laws, these are not my rules!"
Very familiar with yurts, have priced them. For the downtown Davis grid I'm an advocate of sustainable permanent structures that also meet an aesthetic similar to the original architecture of the town. However, there may be some cool opportunities to have several yurts or teepees (this is a whole category of yurt-like housing) located along the Blackwater River. Care to book a night in a luxe yurt located on a bend in the river? Comes with turndown service, a chocolate on your pillow and breakfast at Hypno? Interested?
